This not only supports local agriculture but also ensures that plants are well-suited to the region’s climate, reducing the need for long-distance shipping and resulting in healthier, more vibrant offerings for customers.
One of the unique advantages of a family business, Andersen explains, is open communication and a shared vision. Decisions are made efficiently, with everyone working toward common goals. Over the years, nearly every family member has contributed to the business, whether through seasonal work during school or taking on active roles in operations. This close-knit dynamic fosters a sense of teamwork and continuity that customers feel when
they visit the nursery.
While the current generation leads the business, the next generation is encouraged to gain outside experience before potentially returning, bringing fresh perspectives and new skills to the family legacy. “Ken and I went out and worked in different industries before coming back to the family business,” Andersen shares, emphasizing the value of outside learning and growth.
Walter Andersen Nursery’s commitment to customer service extends to its business relationships as well. The family recently started banking with California Bank & Trust (CB&T), as they were seeking the same values in their partners as they uphold in their own business. The accessibility and personal touch of their new banking relationship at CB&T have been a positive
change, reflecting their dedication to building strong, supportive networks.

The family remains dedicated to serving their loyal customer base, some of whom have been shopping with them for over half a century.
